Americans say they have a lot of confidence in the military and small businesses, but not much in big business, health maintenance organizations and Congress, according to Gallup’s annual survey about confidence in American institutions.
Here’s how various institutions stack up (combining “a great deal” and “quite a lot” responses). Click on the chart for a larger view:
Looking at historical trends, small businesses are always at or near the top of the confidence list, while big business and Congress have been at or near the bottom every year. The military gained substantially from the mid-’70s to early-’80s when its confidence level was in the 50% range.
